Kitchen Gadgets Worth Buying vs. Ones That End Up in a Drawer

Kitchen gadget aisles are full of single-use tools that get used twice and then live in a drawer forever. Here's how to tell which ones earn their space.

Ask what it replaces, not what it does

Every gadget demo makes the tool look essential. The better question is what you're currently using instead, and whether the new tool is meaningfully faster or easier — not just different. A garlic press only earns a drawer slot if mincing garlic with a knife genuinely slows you down; if it doesn't, the press just becomes one more thing to wash.

Multi-function tools win on small kitchens

If counter and drawer space is tight, prioritize tools that fold, nest, or combine functions — a chopper that also julienne-slices, a colander that doubles as a mixing bowl. A single-purpose tool has to be extremely good at that one thing to justify the space it takes up permanently.

Check what's dishwasher-safe before buying

This sounds minor until it's the reason a gadget stops getting used. Anything with small blades, tight crevices, or multiple parts is more likely to get skipped after a few uses if it means hand-washing every piece separately. Read the care instructions before checking out, not after.

Material matters less than people think — attachment quality matters more

Stainless steel blades and BPA-free plastic are table stakes at this point; almost everything claims both. The real differentiator is how securely parts attach to each other. Read a handful of reviews specifically for mentions of pieces loosening, cracking at the joint, or blades coming detached during use — that's the failure mode that actually matters day to day.

One we'd point to

Yusshn 12-in-1 vegetable chopper

Combines dicing, slicing, shredding and grating into one attached-container tool, which covers the multi-function test above better than most single-blade choppers.
